ABOUT  ANGIE MCDERMOTT

I've had the privilege of coaching hundreds of executives throughout my career. As an HR Leader, I have helped companies in all stages of growth attract, develop, and retain key talent — from young, fast-growing organizations to Fortune 50 firms. As a coach, I have partnered with CEOs who needed a trusted thought partner and helped emerging leaders who, over time, reached senior leadership levels.

After getting my Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, I started my career at Procter and Gamble as a consultant. I played critical roles in building scalable, global people systems, including employment testing, worldwide engagement surveys, and strategic research.

I joined Dell during its hyper-growth phase as its employee population increased by five-fold — from 8,000 to 45,000. I served in various senior manager roles to help build talent and leadership capabilities. This included developing Dell's Management Development Program within Dell University, responsible for executive assessments, coaching (when coaching was becoming a practice area), and development. I also served as the OD leader for a large business segment.

Prompted by the need for flexibility while raising my children, I started my consulting firm focused on executive coaching and team development for technology companies of all sizes and stages. I also co-created a series of Executive Retreats for women that resulted in many of our participants making life-changing shifts – many stepping into more significant leadership roles. I also participated as a coach in the coaching network for Dell.

After being hired by one of my clients to run HR for Convio (a software company focused on helping nonprofits), I pivoted to creating and running HR departments and serving as a part of the executive team for technology firms. I approached the people side of the business from an organizational effectiveness perspective leveraging my in-depth expertise in leadership and team effectiveness. As an HR Leader, I helped IPO two companies, participated in acquiring over eight companies, and experienced being acquired once. Along the way, I helped build great executive teams who built great companies.

I now run McDermott Group Consulting, a consulting and coaching practice. I'm also on the McCombs School of Business faculty at the University of Texas, teaching Honors Business undergraduate and MBA students. My current focus is helping women and disenfranchised people realize their leadership potential.
